Cherry Tomatoes

One of my favorite (and most successful so far) sowing of seeds are my beloved cherry tomatoes. I started them in mid February in our solarium. I originally planted 18 seeds and from that I got 13 thriving seedlings that have since grown into 13 beautiful plants. Although it's a little too cold to transplant them outside just yet, in an attempt to help in whatever way possible my lovely husband came home the other day with an interesting contraption called, "The Topsy Turvy." Luckily for my lack of patience and one especially lively tomato plant, we didn't have to wait to give Mr. Turvy a go.

The idea of the Topsy Turvy is a good one, I suppose. The tomato plants are hung upside down and grown downwards rather than climbing so that eliminates the need for stakes. Apparently this also helps the tomatoes retain nutrients easier and cuts down the chance of fungus and bacteria. Getting the plant in the container however, proved to be a little more challenging. But after some blood, sweat and tears (well, a little prodding actually) I got the plant settled nice and secure in The Topsy Turvy.

The rest of the tomato plants are just biding their time in the solarium for a little warmer weather and then they'll be transplanted in the back yard. I'm glad I took Martha Stewart's advice when she said, "don't rush the season," because it snowed here for the last two days and my coveted tomato plants would have been but a distant memory. It will be interesting to see how the Topsy Turvy pans out compared to regular planting. I'll certainly keep you updated.
